Text | BENJAMIN GARSIDE GRADWELL M.B.Cantab., D.P.M. Dr. B. G. Gradwell, consultant psychiatrist to the Home Office and honorary clinical assistant at West- minster Hospital, London, died on April 6 at the age of 44. He was educated at Repton and Queen’s College, Cam- bridge, graduating M.B. in 1953, and completed his medical training at Westminster Hospital. After holding house- appointments at St. Stephen’s Hospital, Fulham, he served as a ship’s surgeon with the Booth and Shaw Saville Lines before taking up psychiatric practice. He took the D.P.M. in 1959 and held appointments in various hospitals in the South West Metropolitan region and at Westminster Hospital. Recently he had been a visiting psychotherapist at Wandsworth Prison and H.M. Borstal at Rochester. Ben was an extrovert, with a lively personality. He had a wide circle of friends. At Cambridge he had been active in the re-formation of the Footlights Review after the 1939-45 war; as a Yorkshireman he enjoyed cricket, and after his first voyages he always retained his love of the sea, making frequent trips as a ship’s surgeon when other duties permitted. He will be remembered and sadly missed by his friends and patients alike for his unfailing kindness and amiable good humour. He is survived by his wife. J. S. W. | |
