Later joined Territorial Army, was a Regimental Sergeant Major when WWII started, but became a Battery Sergeant Major in Royal Engineers. Stationed at Hatfield, then later elsewhere in England, manning searchlights with Royal Engineers. Royal Artillery took them over about 1940. Medically discharged for duodenal ulcer near the end of the war. In 1945, took over as custodian and bartender in Drill Hall in Southfields, London, for Territorial Army for about 5 years.
