- Joined army with Teddy’s birth certificate, Second Battalion? Coldstream Guards. Served in Turkey in 1920; crossed the Gobi Desert. Served in Ireland during Irish Rebellion, getting bayonet wound in his neck. Probably served for 7 years with Coldstream Guards because he was married in uniform in 1927. Late 1920s, worked for Watneys Brewery as drayman in Mortlake. Later joined Territorial Army, was a Regimental Sergeant Major when WWII started, but became a Battery Sergeant Major in Royal Engineers. Stationed at Hatfield, then later elsewhere in England, manning searchlights with Royal Engineers. Royal Artillery took them over about 1940. Medically discharged for duodenal ulcer near the end of the war.
In 1945, took over as custodian and bartender in Drill Hall in Southfields, London, for Territorial Army for about 5 years. Lived with Ellen in adjoining apartment while Roy, Joyce, Maureen and Doreen, Norman and Lynda stayed at their house in Birdhurst Road.
